1. KSEA-GA 2006 Fall Seminar [Photos]
The Georgia Chapter of KSEA cordially invites you to our First Annual Fall Seminar. This inaugural event will feature two exciting talks: one by a member of our local Chapter, and another by our invited guest speaker. We are proud to present back-to-back titles, starting with a very earthly topic, followed by a very heavenly one.
The guest speaker will be Professor Ho Jung Paik, a renowned physicist in the scientific community and a leading authority in the field of Gravitational Wave Detection. He is President of the Association of Korean Physicists in America (AKPA), and also serves as a Councilor for Group A of the National KSEA. This seminar is in conjunction with his public talk entitled "Einstein's Theory of Relativity and the Expanding Universe" for a general audience, scheduled for 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 19th, at the Korean Center on Buford Highway, which is supported by AKPA, KUSCO (the Korea-US Science Cooperation Center), and the Korean-American Association of Greater Atlanta.

[1] Member's talk
Topic: Groundwater Pollution and Contaminant Migration.
Speaker: Wonyong Jang, Ph.D., P.E. , Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology

Abstract: Groundwater is an important fresh water resource throughout the world. It is used for public and domestic water supply systems, and agricultural and industrial purposes. In the United States, more than 70 billion gallons of fresh groundwater is withdrawn daily. Nearly half of the nation's overall population and about 99% of the population in rural areas used groundwater as drinking water. In many areas of the U.S., the future sustainability of groundwater resources is at risk from overuse and contamination. Groundwater contamination is often caused by spillage, leakage, or release of toxic chemicals from transport and storage facilities or from uncontrolled hazardous landfills. Volatile organic compounds, such as solvents and hydrocarbon fuels, are among major chemicals found in many contaminated sites. In this presentation, the current status of groundwater pollution, its effect on public heath, and numerical studies on soil and groundwater contamination will be discussed.
[2] Invited Talks
Topic:Einstein's Unfinished Symphony: Deep Cosmic Voice of Gravity Waves
Speaker: Dr. Ho-Jung Paik, Professor, Department of Physics, University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742

Abstract: It has been 90 years since the existence of gravitational waves was predicted by Einstein in his general theory of relativity. Although Weber started his pioneering work on gravitational waves 45 years ago and large-scale research and development efforts have been mounted since then, gravit ational waves have been found to be most elusive. With the progress being made on the ground-based and space-based laser interferometers, there is a good prospect for detecting gravitational waves by the centennial of General Relativity.
In this talk, I will review the principle and design of the resonant-mass and laser-interferometer gravitational-wave detectors. I will report the sensitivities reached for cryogenic resonant-mass detectors as well as ground-based laser interferometers, and discuss the prospect of improving their sensitivities further. I will also discuss the progress toward LISA, a space laser-interferometer mission. I will then address the urgent need to develop theoretical templates for various kinds of astrophysical signals.
